            Vocabulary & Collocations

How these words and collocations will help us speak English fluently and confidently

As I'm writing this post, it's raining here in Mumbai. Yes, it's the rainy season in Mumbai. It's called the monsoons too. We wait for the monsoons throughout the hot season of summer which starts with the colourful festival of Holi. No one can deny the atmosphere of love that this beautiful festival brings with it. Family and friends and neighbours all get together to play with colours. But there are some for whom Holi brings even greater joy. Can you guess who they are? Yes, that's right. People in love! Sweethearts who love to play Holi because on this day, restrictions are relaxed. The bold among them will even go to the homes of their sweethearts for their passion gives them courage and they are almost fearless because on this day no one can refuse them a bit of fun. Of course, all this is done with proper behaviour and within the limits of respect and decency.

Houses everywhere are covered with splashes of colour-yellow,blue,red,orange and many more. Of course some of the colours are such that it's slightly difficult to wash them off. One does accept that it's a bit of a problem to get the colours off one's skin but the enthusiasm with which Holi is played more than makes up for this.

For most people in India, the festival of Holi signals the start of summer which can be very hot in many parts of the country. The long wait for the monsoon begins. The brick walls of the houses are small protection against the heat. In those parts of the country which are away from the coast, only those who are truly fearless and bold have the courage to venture out in the afternoon when the sun is at its most fearsome.

As you can see in the passage above, I have used so many words and collocations from the lists below. These lists are taken from what I have spoken in the English Aam Spoken English Mehfil Number 6. A few related words and collocations have been added to these lists.

                                     Section I

The use of possessives - my,our, your, his, her, its, their - in spoken English

As we go through our day speaking English, there will be many occasions to use possessives. Right from the time we open our eyes in the morning, we start using these words. Let's take a few examples: 'I'm brushing my teeth.' 'I've had my breakfast.' 'Come on! We'll miss our bus!'
'Papa has forgotten to take his mobile with him again.' 'She's at her office.' 'His exams start next week.' 'The company is opening its new branch tomorrow.' 'The puppy is chasing its own tail.' 'She's talking with her mother on the phone.' 'I don't have his email address.' 'Can I have your mobile number?' 'What's your name?' 'Those are their children.''They want to sell their old car.' 'It's their wedding anniversary today.'
So you see, we use these words all the time. I could keep on giving you examples which you will find you use in your daily conversations when you speak English. We need to understand the proper use and pronunciation of these words,

In English grammar, the words my-our-your-their-her-his-its can be said to be possessive determiners or possessive adjectives. But, as I always say, let's not get bogged down in grammar definitions. We should just know what role these words play in spoken English. The best way to understand this is to look at some translations.

In a restaurant, you could ask the waiter, 'Can I have my bill please.' In Hindi-Urdu, this will be, 'Krupya mera bill dijiye.
You book an order for some medicines over the phone and need to send them to the customer and you ask,'What's your address?' This will translate as,'Aapka pata kya hai.'
Your daughter has been playing outdoors and her hands are dirty. In spoken English, it's 'I have to wash her hands. In Hindi-Urdu we say,'Mujhe uske haath dhoney hain.
When speaking English,'That's his car.' In Hindi-Urdu,'Woh uski gaadi hai.'
You talk about someone's shop,'Their shop is in Mumbai.'  In Hindi-Urdu we say,
'Unki dukaan Mumbai mein hai.'
