Something more about the pronouns he,she,they in English grammar



In the first part of this spoken English lesson we talked about the pronouns 'he' and 'she' and we saw how, when we speak English, we use them to talk about persons and pet animals. In this lesson, we will see how we can talk about more than one person.

they -  used to talk about more than one person, when we refer to people other than those we
 are talking to. This pronoun 'they' is also used to refer to things, animals, places and feelings or emotions. In this spoken English lesson we will talk about 'they' in connection with people. We will talk about the other uses of 'they' in another lesson.

When we talk about one boy or one man, we say 'he'. 


Rajesh is my friend. He lives in Mumbai.  

Look at that boy! He's riding his bike so fast.


When we talk about more than one boy or man, we say 'they'

Bharat and Anis are my classmates. They play chess.
Those men are repairing the car. They're mechanics.

When we talk about one girl or one woman, we say 'she'.

I like Nupur. She's so polite and warm.
That's my friend Robert's mom. She works at the bank.

When we talk about more than one girl or woman, we say 'they'

Those girls are my neighbours. They're students.
Meena and Asha are my cousins. They teach accounts.


When we talk about one boy (or man) and one girl (or woman) or more than one boy and more than one girl together, we say 'they'.

Rajesh and Seema are my friends. They live in Delhi.
Five boys and seven girls from my college are on a tour. They're in Singapore at present.
